Elements of a high voltage

High-voltage wires

Treat high-voltage part of system of ignition along with the coil of ignition and the distributor – already there was a speech about them – as well high-voltage wires, tips of wires with the noise suppressing resistor and, of course, spark plugs.

The thick connecting wires passing from the ignition coil to the distributor or from the distributor to spark plugs (to model with the 6-cylinder engine without distributor), usually do not bring any trouble. They have to be densely inserted by the tips with noise suppressing resistors (noise elimination for radio) into ignition distributor cover nests. Their shtekerny connections should not be oxidized, and they have to have a good contact with tips of spark plugs.

If high-voltage wires became rigid and fragile, it is necessary to establish the new. For the 6-cylinder engine they can be bought complete with both plugs.

For 4-and 5-cylinder engines you need to get a cut of a multiwire flexible copper high-voltage wire necessary for you and brass plugs relating here for the ends of a cable in shop of spare parts. To squeeze brass plugs on the ends of a cable, to put on tips of spark plugs and tips with noise suppressing resistors before fixing, it is ready.

 Help: "not tight" places in high-voltage wires can easily be noticed if to glance at night at the working engine in a motor compartment. Then the ignition sparks slipping on a cable are well visible. The weak light patches of light "running" on a cable, on the contrary, are absolutely harmless.

Tips of candles, tips with noise suppressing resistors

  • In Audi it is possible to apply only certain tips of spark plugs. Suitable tips have to have own resistance of 4 — 6 kOhm.
  • The same belongs and to tips with the noise suppressing resistors installed on connections of the distributor and coil of ignition. Their own resistance has to make 0,6 — 1,4 kOhm.
  • The ignition distributor runner also has to have a certain noise suppressing resistor of 0,6 — 1,4 kOhm. It is designated by an inscription of "R1".

 Help: if the engine constantly or from time to time (at damp weather) works not at all cylinders, it can be quite often connected with faulty tips of spark plugs. There is a leakage of a spark through insulating material between a metal cover and a high-voltage electrode. Otherwise in most cases it is impossible to determine by a candle tip, whether it "punches". For check replace a candle tip with another. Help on the way: remove the metal screen of the plug.

Ignition order

High-voltage wires of the distributor of ignition connect to candles according to an ignition order. Figures show, to what cylinder (an account method: in front back) the corresponding wire has to be brought. At the left the 4-cylinder engine, on the right – 5-cylinder is represented.

For equal operation of the engine cylinders, for example the 4-cylinder engine, light not as 1 – 2 – 3 – 4, and in a sense words randomly. According to an order of ignition high-voltage wires are brought to an ignition distributor cover. If the distributor runner at the dustproof cover uncovered the distributor and removed shows on a mark on the edge of the distributor case, so the cylinder 1 (what ahead of all others in the direction of the movement) is in the ignition moment. It is a starting point at putting on of wires.

Ignition order (operating procedure of cylinders) in our engines is as follows:


  1. 4-cylinder engine: 1 – 3 – 4 – 2, the runner of the distributor rotates to the right (clockwise).
  2. 5-cylinder engine: 1 – 2 – 4 – 5 – 3, the runner of the distributor rotates to the right (clockwise).
  3. 6-cylinder engine: 1 – 4 – 3 – 6 – 2 – 5. The distributor is absent – the order of connections of wires of a high voltage to a package of coils of ignition corresponds to an order of cylinders. Example: the high-voltage wire from connection behind on the right conducts to the cylinder behind on the right.
